A
sprite rip of the Japanese Game Doki
Doki Panic, Super Mario Bros. 2 remains
one of the most controversial and
standout titles in the Super Mario
series for this very reason.
The
title was later released in Japan
under the name "Super Mario USA".
In
this game, players could choose Princess
Peach (known as "Princess Toadstool"
back then) as a playable character
for the very first time, making use
of her powerful ability to float in
midair. This came at the sacrifice
of low running speed and physical
strength to lift up objects out of
the ground quickly. Her floating and
ability to pluck vegetables from the
ground to throw at enemies later became
part of her moveset in the Super Smash
Bros. series.
